We have set up experiments and monitoring arrangements on Carbon Action farms, other farms, and study sites to find out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"h2pc\">On each Carbon Action farm, a tailored carbon farming method is tested on a 1,5 ha plot while a neighboring 1,5 ha plot serves as a business-as-usual <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bsag.fi\/en\/explore-materials\/how-do-farmers-choose-the-carbon-farming-practices\/\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.bsag.fi\/en\/explore-materials\/how-do-farmers-choose-the-carbon-farming-practices\/\" target=\"_blank\">reference<\/a>. Each technique is tested on several farms because the outcome depends on many factors, such as the farmer, soil, and location. Field Observatory collects the relevant data from <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.5194\/gi-11-93-2022\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.5194\/gi-11-93-2022\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">different sources<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group is-nowrap is-layout-flex wp-container-core-group-is-layout-3 wp-block-group-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-1 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Offline field and lab measurements<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"h3pc\">We have collected soil samples from each Advanced Carbon Action Site annually since 2019 and taken laboratory measurements of <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/zenodo.org\/communities\/carbonaction?page=1&amp;size=20\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/zenodo.org\/communities\/carbonaction?page=1&amp;size=20\" target=\"_blank\">these samples<\/a>. We use these data to track changes in soil organic matter, microbes, nutrients, and physical properties. In addition,&nbsp; we have observed soil structure and vegetation characteristics in the field to supplement the laboratory analyses.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Soil measurements<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"h3pc\">Sensors continuously measure soil conditions, such as moisture, temperature, and salinity, at the Advanced Carbon Action sites and other study sites.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group is-nowrap is-layout-flex wp-container-core-group-is-layout-4 wp-block-group-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-2 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Weather data<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"h3pc\">We retrieve weather information from the nearest weather station of the Finnish Meteorological Institute or the Swedish Meteorological and Hydrological Institute if it is not measured at the site. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Satellite data<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"h3pc\">We monitor all sites using Sentinel-2 mission high-resolution multispectral images to calculate the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) and estimate Leaf Area Index (LAI). We retrieve these images from <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/earthengine.google.com\/\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/earthengine.google.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Google Earth Engine<\/a>. cloud data platform and Registry of Open Data on Amazon Web Services. The indexes update every two days if the images satisfy quality control criteria.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group is-nowrap is-layout-flex wp-container-core-group-is-layout-5 wp-block-group-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-3 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Eddy covariance measurements<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"h3pc\">We continuously measure greenhouse gas, water, and energy fluxes between the ecosystem and the atmosphere at some study sites using <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.5194\/bg-18-3467-2021\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.5194\/bg-18-3467-2021\" target=\"_blank\">an eddy covariance method<\/a>. This method is based on high-frequency measurements of vertical wind speed and greenhouse gas concentrations. FMI\u2019s algorithm automatically filters the data and fills in <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1038\/s41598-023-28827-2\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1038\/s41598-023-28827-2\" target=\"_blank\">data gaps<\/a>. The online data are provisional and subject to further quality control. Additional information on the eddy covariance data is available from the FMI\u2019s contact person.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Photosynthetically Active Radiation data<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"h3pc\">We retrieve Photosynthetically Active Radiation data from the <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.soda-pro.com\/web-services\/radiation\/cams-radiation-service\/info\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.soda-pro.com\/web-services\/radiation\/cams-radiation-service\/info\" target=\"_blank\">Copernicus Atmospheric Monitoring Service (CAMS) Radiation Service<\/a> if we do not measure it at the site.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>REAL-LIFE FARMING MEETS SCIENCE Carbon Action farms, other farms, and study sites produce data on the impacts of land management on carbon sequestration and ecosystem functioning.
